Tento rum vznikl z potřeby kapitalizovat cukrovou třtinu pěstovanou na pozemku Roberta Redversa Greavese, aby udržel pozemek a důlní podnikání svého otce. Robert začal stavět vlastní destilační zařízení a experimentovat s destilací šťávy z cukrové třtiny, čímž zdokonaloval svůj destilát. V roce 2015 získal licenci na výrobu alkoholu a začal vyrábět a prodávat svůj destilát na místním africkém trhu. V současnosti se rum Mhoba prodává i v zahraničí.
Mhoba Strand’s 101 je výsledkem míchání dvou druhů rumů – High Ester a Select Reserve Glass Cask – které se destilují ze šťávy z cukrové třtiny. High Ester používá dunder, má 21denní fermentaci se směsí divokých a komerčních kvasinek a destiluje se v hrncových destilačních kotlů, které postavil sám Robert. Select Reserve Glass Cask zraje 2 roky ve skleněných demižonech obsahujících zuhelnatělé palice z amerického bílého dubu.
